Open Call: In Situ Platform
From 2025, IN SITU, the European network for art in public spaces, will launch PLATFORM, a four-year program aimed at identifying and supporting 200 emerging artists who will create works in urban and rural settings. The program is an innovative and effective support initiative to develop artistic practices in public spaces and unconventional locations at a pan-European level.

What is IN SITU?
Since 2009, Metropolis-KIT has been a partner of IN SITU, the European platform for art in public spaces. IN SITU is an international network of over 20 partners, primarily festivals, that has supported more than 300 artists working outside conventional venues—in urban, peri-urban, suburban, extra-urban, natural contexts, and landscapes—for over 20 years. IN SITU is led by Lieux Publics in Marseille and is funded by the EU/Creative Europe.
Purpose of IN SITU PLATFORM & Open Call
The purpose of IN SITU PLATFORM is to provide artists with opportunities to connect, produce, and present their work in public spaces across Europe.
In January 2025, the first open call will be launched, selecting 65 emerging artists.
The selected artists will receive:
- An online program focused on artistic production in public spaces
- Peer-to-peer exchange with experienced IN SITU artists and partners
- A one-week immersive lab alongside 13 other artists, offering valuable input, networking, and opportunities to develop project proposals
In the second phase, 10–12 projects will be selected to receive support through residencies, co-production, and touring. Each artist/company will be granted at least two residencies and one presentation opportunity.
IN SITU’s Definitions of “Emerging Artists”
- Aesthetic emergence: Projects/artists working with new, innovative, and creative formats that push the boundaries of contemporary art and renegotiate the relationship with the audience.
- Geographical emergence: Artists recognized locally in their home country but on the verge of breaking through on the European stage, with particular focus on projects from countries where art in public spaces faces significant challenges.
- Generational emergence: Artists from a broad range of genres who are new to presenting their work in public spaces, with an emphasis on those at the beginning of their careers.
This open call is for projects intended to be presented to the public around mid-2026.
