TORA BALSLEV – Rævshale / exercises in future

Urban development performance that gives plans a body

Refshaleøen is on the verge of major urban development. Plans and proposals will be published in April – and you are invited to step into them as Tora Balslev uses them as a script for six living, sensory explorations of the site’s possible futures.

Plans can be abstract, but when we walk through them, move within them, play with them, read, write, and tell stories about them, they become something our bodies can feel and understand.

Each day during Performing Landscapes, Tora invites you on a new journey – a new action. We borrow the fox’s gaze: cunning and curious, it follows its own routes – ones that do not always align with human plans.

With Refshaleøen’s development as a starting point, we cannot avoid asking the larger questions: Who are we building for? What kinds of life will be given space? And can we already sense the future in what is beginning to emerge?

ABOUT RÆVSHALE – a three-year woven project

RÆVSHALE is Tora Balslev’s three-year woven project, exploring Refshaleøen’s past, present, and future through artistic practice. The project unfolds through a series of artistic investigations of the island, continuously shared with the public through performative actions.

Refshaleøen is a compelling performative site because three different temporalities emerge within its landscape: an iconic industrial past, a culturally diverse present, and the beginnings of large-scale construction projects for the future. This places the island in a fascinating “now” – both as a local process of transformation and as a reflection of broader global conditions and questions.
