KATRINE GRARUP ELBO – Opløst / Dissolved & The air between our bodies – konturer af fravær
OPLØST / DISSOLVED
A quiet, symphonic sound work from the underground
Step down into the submerged passage by the historic dock on Refshaleøen. Here, water slowly seeps in, softening and dissolving the passage’s hard shell.
Opløst / Dissolved is a meditative symphony in which the site’s own sounds merge with the tones of the surrounding basins. The heavy, industrial meets the weightless and melodic.
What happens when concrete, metal, and iron are gradually softened? And what does this reflect within us? Inspired by Astrida Neimanis’ concept of the hydrocommons – the idea that every being on Earth is a body of water – Opløst / Dissolved invites you into a sensory listening experience, held by the dim tunnel and the site’s fluid cycles.
NB: Opløst / Dissolved was part of the sound walk Witness Stand during Metropolis 2025.
2 / THE AIR BETWEEN OUR BODIES – KONTURER AF FRAVÆR
Imagine a space you cannot see – only hear
The work is a musical meditation on change and loss, created specifically for Refshaleøen’s historic dock. You are invited to find your way by listening and to discover your surroundings through sound alone.
How do we use sound to understand the world around us?
How do we experience a place if it exists only through its sounds?
And which sounds are, in fact, echoes of something that is no longer here?
Violinist and composer Katrine Grarup Elbo has orchestrated sounds from the industrial harbour and transformed them into the site’s utopian echo. Through subtle shifts in the sounds, she disorients our sense of direction, compelling us to listen our way forward rather than rely on sight.
Live, she weaves solo violin and breath into twelve-tone rows – like the fleeting wind that will always be here, while what it carries is only ever glimpsed. In this way, the work becomes an omen – an echo of something that will soon be gone.
