WHAT Performance
From Human to Bird
HIMMELBÅREN is an outdoor performance—a living ritual, a transformation from human to bird under the open sky
A woman loses her sister. She sees her in a dream, with a giant, scaly primordial bird. She wants to bring her sister back. The audience embarks on a journey through a mythical landscape. Throughout the performance, the audience is invited into installations, storytelling, transformative soundscapes, and live choral performance.
HIMMELBÅREN is the culmination of two years of research and exploration into birds. Here, we encounter birds: as fascinating fauna and fragile species, but also as awe-inspiring beings. Despite their small size, birds possess incredible resilience and an ability to adapt to changes in nature. They can shift habitats, migrate in search of food and temperature, and some can even remain airborne for months—soaring above, looking down on a burning planet, leaving us to the world we have created.
Birds embody the transformation, adaptation, and resilience that humans increasingly need. In HIMMELBÅREN, the strangely heavy, earthbound human is lifted—rising toward the floating creature to gaze in awe into its depths.
ABOUT WUNSCHMACHINE
WunschMachine bridges physical theatre, performance, and anthropology. We explore reality through the body, senses, disciplines, poetry, and personal stories, weaving them together into form. Our expression lives outside the walls of the theatre—folk avant-garde with a glint of humor.
