Discover how fossil you are

Take a walk through the outer and inner landscapes of petroculture.

Fossil substances are everywhere; in our cars, our fillings in our teeth and in the painkillers we swallow. The fossil creature is a part of our lives. Is it possible to untangle ourselves from it?

We walk on Refshaleøen, where industry has left its mark, and fossil energy weaves its way into the past, present and future. Here, the diesel engine had its cradle, and container ships sailed to all corners of the world. Here, construction is in full swing on the artificial island Lynetteholmen, where 35,000 homes are to be built. All with the help of enormous amounts of fossil energy.

In this landscape we walk – and ask: How can we feel the fossil in our body and our nervous system? What does fossil culture do to us as humans? How can we breathe in it and move forward?

We live in a time that has the accelerator at full speed, and the performance lets us feel the connection between the ecological crisis and the crisis in mental health. A guide leads us through the landscape in a mix of factual narrative, dancing tableaus and physical tasks. The walk opens our senses and feeds our imagination, while we seek to calibrate ourselves with the landscape.

On Refshaleøen, choreographer and performance artist Tora Balslev and her company Daily Fiction have created four works over three years, among others in collaboration with Metropolis, where the audience was most recently able to experience the creation of Fossil Feel during Performing Landscapes.

Tora has encountered an island in rapid transformation – a place that calls for us as humans to see where we stand in order to move forward wisely.

That is why she is starting a long-term project on Refshaleøen in collaboration with Metropolis. Fossil Feel is the first part of RÆVSHALE – a three-year study on Refshaleøen, where Tora, in interaction with the place, the audience, students, researchers, etc., uses art to gain insight into a place and at the same time uses the place as a lens to discover ourselves and our time in new ways.

FOSSIL FEEL TORA BALSLEV DAILY FICTION METROPOLIS 2025ABOUT THE ARTIST

Daily Fiction by choreographer and performer Tora Balslev creates experimental and genre-breaking performances, several of which are developed and presented in collaboration with Metropolis. She often physically activates the audience in the landscape and connects the sensory and playful with the reflexive and critical. Tora’s works are created over time and are part of an ongoing conversation with researchers, audiences, students and various local and social groups.

Fossil Feel is developed in collaboration with the Center for Art and Mental Health by psychiatrist Birgit Bundesen, as well as researchers from the Department of Psychology, University of Copenhagen, and the research group Art and Social Relations at the University of Agder, Norway.
