The invisible life of the forest – and our role in it
Dive deep into the network of invisible breaths and tangled threads of fate in Hareskoven. Here, where species meet and form communities, where survival is a constant negotiation, and where the death of rot is the bread of the other.
BIOCOENOSIS investigates how fungi, trees and humans are interconnected. The artist duo Beyond Darkness has once again created a radical work based on scientific research and ecological philosophy – about the networks and warfare of fungi, about the communication of trees and about human interference.
Through choreography, sound and sensory encounters, we come very close to the invisible ecosystem of the forest. Beyond Darkness works minimalistically and unassumingly to remove the blur created by the human-centered worldview. They bring the more-than-human closer to us and sharpen our sensory and emotional connection to our surroundings.
BIOCOENOSIS is a concept for a shared habitat with many species that live together, shape each other and are dependent on each other. As in their previous works, Beyond Darkness is concerned with how we humans can recognize our connection with all living things and better embrace our role as participants in the great biocoenosis that we call Earth.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
BIOCOENOSIS is an outdoor walking performance that moves through both forest paths and uneven terrain. Therefore, please wear practical, stable footwear and clothing according to the weather. Bring water and snacks for your own need.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Beyond Darkness is the artistic duo of Nadja Mattioli and Nanna Hanfgarn Jensen. Rooted in choreography, performance, and ecocentric installation, their work invites audiences into immersive, sensorial landscapes where human and beyond-human perspectives intertwine.
Beyond Darkness approaches creation with deep attentiveness to the physical, emotional, and spatial conditions, cultivating environments where slowness, listening, and shared authorship can thrive. It is a practice of nurturing, not just the body in movement, but the spaces between us and the worlds we inhabit. They move between artistic, scientific, and social disciplines, collaborating with dancers, sound artists, mycologists, and researchers to create performances that reimagine our relationship with the more-than-human world. How do we listen to the rhythms of non-human life? How can we embody the invisible, the underground, the interconnected?
You have previously been able to experience Beyond Darkness at Metropolis with the landscape performance MORPHOSIS in 2023 and as part of Performing Landscapes 2023 and 2024.
