Valget af Storbritannien faldt ikke sv\u00e6rt. Der var i midten af 80\u2019erne en markant, ny generation af britiske kunstnere, som vi gerne ville bringe til Danmark, ogs\u00e5 i h\u00e5b om at stimulere en dialog med den danske scenekunst, der ikke mindst i 80\u2019erne kiggede mod vest.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>10 \u00e5r senere kom der for alvor gang i denne dialog med projektet New Words, New Language, New Theatre, hvor danske og britiske kunstnere m\u00f8dtes b\u00e5de p\u00e5 og uden for scenen.<\/p>\n<p>The British Are Coming var samtidig et resultat af et nyt og us\u00e6dvanligt samarbejde mellem en selvst\u00e6ndig organisation som KIT og en national organisation som The British Council, der var enige om, at tiden var inde til at pr\u00e6sentere et relevant modbillede til de etablerede West End-teatre og popmusik. Briterne kom, spillede og sejrede i K\u00f8benhavn i 1987. Rygtet bredte sig til \u00c5rhus og Odense og p\u00e5 The British Councils initiativ kom et nyt kulturelt samarbejde i stand mellem de tre byer, der blev af stor betydning for de senere Images of Africa-festivaler.<\/p>\n<p>The British Are Coming viste nyskabende og oftest selvst\u00e6ndigt producerende kunstnere inden for teater, dans, performance, musik og film. Det velkendte og etablerede m\u00e5tte vige pladsen \u2013 med Royal Court, Cheek by Jowl og Royal Shakespeare Company som de fornemme undtagelser.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Court Theatre\u2019s Road med rocksangeren Ian Dury i hovedrollen \u2013 k\u00e5ret til \u00e5rets forestilling i England \u2013 var den f\u00f8rste festivals hit. Det var et scoop at f\u00e5 Royal Court, dramatikernes teater, til at forlade Storbritannien for f\u00f8rste gang, men ogs\u00e5 Cheek by Jowls sprudlende, moderne fortolkning af Shakespeares Twelfth Nights var en fuldtr\u00e6ffer i \u00d8stre Gasv\u00e6rk. De forholdsvis f\u00e5, der s\u00e5 lille grotesk-komiske geni-streg A Minute Too Late af Theatre de Complicit\u00e9 var vidne til et af de f\u00f8rste udspil fra et kompagni, der kom igen i 1989 og i dag er et af Storbritanniens toneangivende. Deltagelsen af Royal Shakespeare Companys (RSC) i den anden britiske festival gav ikke kun festivalen et statusm\u00e6ssigt l\u00f8ft, men ogs\u00e5 publikum, anf\u00f8rt af dronning Margrethe, en grusomt betagende oplevelse. Titus Andronicus, iscenesat af den kun 29-\u00e5rige Deborah Warner, modtog umiddelbart inden Danmarksbes\u00f8get, ikke f\u00e6rre end tre Laurence Oliviers Awards.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7581\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7581\" class=\"wp-image-7581 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2-1024x759.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2-1024x759.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2-768x569.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2-700x519.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2-1100x815.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/www.metropolis.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Billede4-2.jpg 1302w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>THEATRE DE COMPLICIT\u00c9<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teatret vakte ubestrideligt mest opm\u00e6rksomhed, men nogle overbevisende eksempler p\u00e5 unge britiske koreografer, udvalgt i samarbejde med Dance Umbrella i London, ikke mindst DV8s My Sex, Our Dance med Lloyd Newson og Nigel Charnock \u2013 begge kunstnere, der siden fik stor betydning for den danske dansescene, Rosemary Butchers samarbejde med komponisten Michael Nyman og Flag af Lea Anderson, bekr\u00e6ftede, at her var begyndelsen til en helt ny \u00e6ra, udsprunget af s\u00e5vel Dartington College som af kreativiteteten i Londons barske randomr\u00e5der.<\/p>\n<p>P\u00e5 performance-omr\u00e5det fandt Bow Gamelan magien i postindustrielle billeder og rytmer, mens Test Department leverede et rasende opg\u00f8r med thatcherismen, som delte publikum i to. Et musikprogram, der inkluderede Reggae Philharmonic Orhestra, Loose Tubes, der med Django Bates i spidsen gav en formidabel koncert p\u00e5 Louisiana, og det nye jazz-talent Courtney Pine i Montmartre samt et filmprogram i Grand-biografen fuldendte programmet.<\/p>\n<p>New Words, New Theatre, New Language I 1998 tog The British Council, Caf\u00e9 Teatret og KIT initiativ til at se n\u00e6rmere p\u00e5 det britiske dramatikerteater, der ikke siden Look Back in Anger-generationen midt i 50\u2019erne havde oplevet en lignende kreativ energi inden for dramatikken.<\/p>\n<p>I Danmark sporede man samme gr\u00f8de. Projektet l\u00e5 ligefor, og med Radioteatret og en r\u00e6kke k\u00f8benhavnske teaterscener som samarbejdspartnere blev der pr\u00e6senteret en lang r\u00e6kke produktioner b\u00e5de engelske og danske, med Caf\u00e9 Teatrets ops\u00e6tning af Mark Ravenhills Shopppnig and Fucking i Alexa Thers iscenes\u00e6ttelse, Sarah Kanes Crave og Howard Barkers Ursula, som tre af h\u00f8jdepunkterne.<\/p>\n<p>Hertil kom en pr\u00e6sentation af Performance Poetry, hvor digtere fra Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh og London for f\u00f8rste gang vovede sig uden for Storbritannien for at udfordre hinanden p\u00e5 ord. New Words afspejlede ikke mindst, at Storbritannien \u2013 ikke Fools-festivalernes England \u2013 havde mange kraftcentre \u2013 geografisk set.<\/p>\n<p>Bogen \u201cNew Words&#8230;\u201d udkom i forbindelse med seminaret, redigeret af Hans Christian Gimbel i samarbejde med Janus Kodal og Filmhuset (Tiderne skifter).<\/p>\n<p>The British Council og danske partnere The British Are Coming viste, at det var muligt at finde finansieringspartnere til us\u00e6dvanlige kulturprojekter og understregede endnu engang, at et samarbejde<br \/>\nmellem lokale og internationale organisationer er i stand til at flytte milep\u00e6le.<\/p>\n<p>The British Are Coming var gjort mulig takket v\u00e6re et samarbejde mellem The British Council, en r\u00e6kke private sponsorer og fonde, K\u00f8benhavns Kommune og Kulturministeriet \u2013 og for The British Are Coming \u201989s vedkommende \u2013 Odense og \u00c5rhus Kommune.<br \/>\nLukningen af Saltlageret bet\u00f8d, at vanskelige spillesteder, som Den Gr\u00e5 Hal og badmintonsbanerne i Ahlefeldtsgade Medborgerhus, m\u00e5tte inddrages. Festivalerne ville absolut have vundet, b\u00e5de publikumsm\u00e6ssigt og funktionsm\u00e6ssigt, om de havde v\u00e6ret koncentreret omkring \u00e9t spillested.<\/p>\n<p>The British Council var ligeledes omdrejningspunktet for New Words, som var et forbilledligt bevis p\u00e5, at n\u00e5r netv\u00e6rkssamarbejdet udf\u00f8res med vision og konsekvens, efterlader det ogs\u00e5 dybe spor.<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"a4_fed\">Publikum og presse<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Festivalerne bekr\u00e6ftede publikums villighed til at \u201ctage chancer\u201d. En bel\u00e6gningsprocent p\u00e5 ca. 75 for uetableret scenekunst var et meget positivt resultat, som blev n\u00e5et med begge festivaler. Endnu en gang oplevede vi dog den paradoksale (og for arrang\u00f8rer bekostelige) situation, grundet publikums lange reaktionstid, at der ikke var udsolgt til premieren p\u00e5 Titus Andronicus af RSC, men alligevel behov for at arrangere en ekstraforestilling. Pressen gav en kvalificeret og meget positiv d\u00e6kning af festivalerne, som i h\u00f8j grad var med til at stimulere den store interesse. Alene den f\u00f8rste festival bet\u00f8d 200 artikler, 15 radioudsendelser plus tv-indslag.<\/p>\n<p>New Words var med sin danske forankring sikret stor publikums- og presseinteresse.<\/p>\n<p>Dette gjaldt ogs\u00e5 de to afsluttende seminarer, hvor danske og engelske teaterfolk havde sat hinanden st\u00e6vne.<br \/>\n_____________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cBravo, Britain. The British Are Coming har tiltrukket et stort, ungt publikum, som man s\u00e6dvanligvis ikke m\u00f8der p\u00e5 de etablerede danske scener. Der er snarere tale om det publikum, som tidligere fylkedes om Fools-festivalerne&#8230;The British Are Coming ligner noget us\u00e6dvanligt. Nemlig et arrangement, der lykkes fornemt, fordi det ikke h\u00f8fligt fors\u00f8ger at behage sit publikum, men vover at udfordre det kunstnerisk.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nEbbe Iversen, Berlingske Tidende<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cBriterne kom og sejrede. Vidt forskellige med hensyn til indhold, stil og arbejsvilk\u00e5r har samtlige tilbud markeret sig ved et udadvendt, \u00e5bent engagement i samtiden. P\u00e5 den led har festivalen adskilt sig klart fra, hvad man tidligere har kunnet opleve af eksperimenterende, fornyende og avantgardistiske, udenlandske g\u00e6stespil&#8230; andre indfaldsvinkler og udtryksm\u00e5der i teatret end dem, vi er vant til at opleve. Og i den henseende har The British Are Coming levet op til de popul\u00e6re Fools-festivaler.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nRandi K. Pedersen, Land og Folk<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cBev\u00e6gende og samtidig forunderlig humoristisk er denne skildring af livet i arbejdsl\u00f8shedens og fattigdommens skygge. Og i Margaret Thatchers England er fattigdom ikke noget relativt, men en helt reel n\u00f8d&#8230; (de) lader os opleve gadens liv som et billede af et helt urimeligt spild, som ogs\u00e5 er hverdag i dagens Danmark&#8230; Disse briter kom, spillede og sejrede. Road er st\u00e6rkt og vedkommende teater.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nBirthe Johansen, Aktuelt<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cLivet narrer, k\u00e6rligheden driller, lykken griber vi forg\u00e6ves efter eller fanger i nogle f\u00e5 uvirkelige \u00f8jeblikke. Men i denne engelske opf\u00f8relse af Helligtrekongersaften falder alting \u2013 eller det meste \u2013 i hak. Pludselig ser vi den Shakespeare, vi troede, vi kendte. Det f\u00f8les som en befrielse.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nJens Kistrup, Berlingske Tidende<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cDet er et fabelagtigt flot stykke, der bruger al mandsdansens spr\u00e6lske dynamik&#8230; At England er lys\u00e5r foran os i teknisk dygtighed og koreografisk sp\u00e6ndvidde, bliver stjerneklart s\u00e5dan en aften.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nMarie-Louise Kj\u00f8lbye, Kristeligt Dagblad (om DV8)<br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n\u201cBow Gamelan viste en seance, der bestemt ikke ligner andre. Industriens affald som lyd- og lysteater, oliet\u00f8nder som kirkeklokker, sk\u00e6rebr\u00e6ndere som hv\u00e6sende musikinstrumenter, fyrv\u00e6rkeri og forunderlige lyde \u2013 b\u00e5de skr\u00e6mmende, sk\u00f8nt og poetisk. En symfoni i S \u2013 s for skrot.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nMogens Garde, B.T.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cDe engelske skuespillere kan et mirakul\u00f8st trick: at spille rollerne helt ud til den yderste gr\u00e6nse, og s\u00e5 alligevel, samtidig, holde dem tre skridt fra livet. Og lykkes det Deborah Warner gennem de f\u00f8rste tre akter at rejse gennem gru til medf\u00f8lelse, lykkes det hende gennem de to sidste at mobilisere en storsl\u00e5et humor gennem stilbrud og stedse sortere farce&#8230; Vi har Peter Brooks ord for, at der h\u00e9r skrives historie.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nMichael Bonnesen, Politiken (om RSC)<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cBrian Cox er med sin fabelagtige nuancering af titelrollen selve n\u00f8dvendigheden for opf\u00f8relsens niveau, men s\u00e5 fremragende spilles der i samtlige roller, at forestillingen er et lysende eksempel p\u00e5 ensemblets betydning for den sublime helhedsoplevelse.\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nViggo S\u00f8rensen, Jyllands-Posten<br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n\u201cMed sine tre klassiker-ops\u00e6tninger for Royal Shakespeare Company er Deborah Warner en af dem, der klarest og mest overbevisende har demonstreret, hvor meget fortidens drama har at sige nutiden&#8230; Her f\u00e5r vi det chok i sj\u00e6len, som er teaterkunstens mening og m\u00e5l.
