We are looking for 45 participants of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.
About you: You enjoy moving outdoors through the city together with others. And you would like to take part in a workshop where we collectively create a “mass on the move”. No previous experience in dance or performance is required.
A MASS ON THE MOVE is a community in the city. An organism of bodies and movement that appears, settles for a while, and then disappears again. It leaves behind no single message, but an experience that continues to resonate with those who encounter it.
The work invites another way of being together – one rooted in presence and connection. It is a manifestation of the possibility of being vulnerable, generous, and attentive together in the city.
The performance is created together with local participants in public space. As a collective, participants inhabit Copenhagen’s streets and squares through a shared choreography of silence, slowness, movement, and presence. Together they lie down, lean against buildings, look up at the sky, gather around architectural elements, or form silent corridors.

WORKSHOP
The workshop explores three central themes: Connecting – Slowing Down – Softness.
Participants engage in simple individual and collective exercises:
- slow movement and collective choreographies
- practices of presence, attention, and sensory awareness
- sharing personal stories and experiences
- collective exploration of public space
Based on the material developed together during the workshop, the group will create a collective outdoor performance in the city.

WHERE
The workshop takes place both indoors and outdoors at various locations across Copenhagen.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
- Open to anyone aged 12 and above (participants under 18 require parental consent).
- No previous experience in dance or theatre is required.
- The workshop will be conducted in English.
- It is important that you are available to participate in one workshop group for all three days and for the full duration.
Fresh fruit and snacks will be provided throughout the workshop.
For participants living outside Copenhagen on the island of Zealand, public transportation costs will be reimbursed.

THE ARTISTS’ DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
A MASS ON THE MOVE forms a temporary collective organism: a network of bodies, gestures, and stories that briefly settles within the city and then dissolves again. It leaves behind neither monument nor singular message, but an experience that continues to resonate – in participants, in passersby, and in the memory of the place itself.
By bringing together slow growth, vulnerability, shared movement, and storytelling in public space, the work invites a different way of being together – based on presence rather than productivity, and connection rather than spectacle. What remains is the experience of being together differently: a manifestation of humanity in its vulnerable, generous, and attentive forms, and the sense that another way of inhabiting the city and relating to one another is possible.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
JOHANNES BELLINKX originally studied social geography before training at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, renowned for its visual and scenographic approach to performance. His interdisciplinary, research-based practice often begins with a radical concept related to the ways we perceive and experience the world. Bellinkx creates works that challenge audiences by expanding their sensory awareness and inviting them to construct their own narratives. At Metropolis, audiences have previously experienced Bellinkx’s binocular installation FRAMING (2017), the backwards walk REVERSE (2019), the sensory installation INSIDE OUT (2025), and the sound walk LIVING MATTERS on Refshaleøen this year.

BENJAMIN VANDEWALLE is a Belgian choreographer and dancer who graduated from the internationally acclaimed dance school P.A.R.T.S. In 2012, he left the theatre to make the city itself his artistic laboratory. Rather than choreographing dancers, he choreographs the city, its inhabitants, and everyday urban life. His works blur the boundaries between spectator and performer, and between reality and fiction, inviting audiences to question how they perceive the world around them.
METROPOLIS has shaped Copenhagen’s public spaces for many years through an ambitious and diverse programme of contemporary performing arts. The programme is presented by Copenhagen International Theatre, which has been producing and presenting performing arts in Copenhagen for almost 50 years with support from the Danish Arts Foundation and the City of Copenhagen.
